Australian Aboriginal artists come from regions all across Australia. There are approximately 6000 aboriginal artists that are actively involved in producing art and craft. Many of these artists have typically led difficult lives and yet have some amzing stories to tell.
At Creative Native, we have artwork from over 115 Australian Aboriginal artists. Many of Australia's most famous Aboriginal artists are represented in our collection. We aim to develop long term relationships with artists and to provide them with a continuous and ongoing source of income.
Aboriginal Artists today paint with varying styles from traditional to contemporary. Many artists still paint traditional sacred dreamings onto canvas, but typically omit important objects or sites that they are not allowed to potray in their paintings.
Artists are able to duplicate what once would have been drawn into the sand onto canvas and boards. They maintain their cultural stories through their artwork and these stories are handed down to younger generations through ceremony and initiation.
Aboriginals see themselves as the custodians of this country. Their dreaming is not just of the land, but of the song, dance and mythology of the land. The paintings we see on canvas today were originally painted in the sand and only lasted until the wind blew.
Canvas is durable and has given the world a chance to learn about the Aboriginals' 'dreaming', their way of life and values." Please browse our gallery for our list of artists and paintings below.
